Should I Get a Facial? And Are There Actual Benefits to Getting One?

It seems like the level of popularity and innovation of professional facials is at an all-time high…Been on Instagram lately?

Facials are not just a luxury but rather an essential part of your skincare routine, especially as we live in a world that’s full of stressors and toxins that can be damaging to your skin.

Benefits

Relaxation

One of the first things that comes to mind about facials is likely relaxation. We call facials “relaxing with benefits” offering stress relief and beautiful glowing skin simultaneously. Also, the power of a touch, massage, proper technique, and professional products feel great and are healing to the soul.

Deep cleansing

Although we like to think our daily skin cleaners are getting deep down into our pores, they can only do so much. A professional facial cleans on a much deeper level. Extractions/cleaning out the pores can help to maintain clear skin, stop acne formation, and help to change the pore’s size.  Often left unchecked, pores can stretch and widen with the accumulation of oil and debris.

Exfoliation

During a facial, the gentle scrubbing sloughs off any dead skin cells to reveal fresh, glowing new skin cells. Exfoliation smoothes skin, allows for greater penetration of products, unclogs pores, improves the skin’s ability to retain hydration, and evens skin tone to just name a few benefits.

Toned and tightened skin

Each facial includes a massage that targets the muscles in your face and jaw. Just like workouts for the rest of your body, working the facial muscles helps to tighten, tone, and lift.

Anti-Aging

By increasing the circulation in your face, the cell turnover rate helps to slow down the aging process. Getting a monthly facial massage stimulates collagen production and strengthen the muscles in your face, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles and gaining softer smoother skin.

How often?

Once per month is ideal because our skin cell turnover cycle is 28 days long. If you give your skin a head start with a great facial, your skin cells will begin to replicate the now healthier cells giving you a better complexion. Another reason to consider is that most skin products can take up to 6-8 weeks to start to treat active skin cells, but by speeding up the renewal process with a facial you can make these products work faster and more effectively.

However, there are a few factors that can change the once-a-month recommendation, like your skin type. Generally, those with oily and acne-prone skin can tolerate facials with more frequency than those with sensitive or dry skin.

As noted, facials offer an array of skin-care benefits, from skin rejuvenation, deep cleansing, and eliminating clogged pores to boosting hydration and evening out discoloration but that doesn't mean that you won’t see results if you can't have monthly treatments due to time or budget. If that’s the case, at a minimum, you should try to receive a facial treatment four times per year, as the seasons change. Regular facials are the key to clear, smooth, and radiant skin throughout the year.
